We know that in a bar magnet like-poles repel and unlike-poles attract. But in a bio-magnet like-poles attract and unlike-poles repel. And since our mind is like a bio-magnet, the same rule applies here. Life situations and people get attracted to us based on what is going on in our mind. Out thought patterns have a greater control over our lives and our destiny.
Though fear can be a motivator and propel us into action, too much of it can be counterproductive. A speaker just before his presentation becomes very nervous and thinks he is about to goof-up his speech. He visualizes himself doing that and the audience laughing over it. Just because his mind is flooded with these thoughts there is a greater chance of the goof-up to happen. Or in the best case the speaker would not be able to enjoy his time before the audience. He would only be able to utilize a fraction of his potential.
Another interesting fact which most of us overlook is that our mind cannot understand the negative command. A very good illustration to this would be the same speaker telling himself “I will not be stressed” or “I will not be tensed”. Though the intention is right but the mind only registers the words “stressed” or “tensed”. It cannot register the negative command before the words. These become the trigger words for the corresponding feelings to dominate or be influenced by.
Instead the speaker has to affirm the positive, for example “I am enjoying my time before the audience” or “I am confidently handling the questions being asked”. Such suggestions trigger the corresponding feelings of control and confidence and it greatly helps the speaker. Mind is a potent tool gifted to us. It can also be compared to a fertile farmland. The farmer takes great care of it and regularly inspects it for weeds and pulls them out in case he finds them. Similarly, our mind is very potent and fertile. We need to be self-observant and remove the weeds (negative thoughts & thought patterns) that will grow wildly if left unchecked.
One of the pre-requisite for success is to focus inward regularly. On a regular basis, that person should consciously break the pattern and remove the disabling negative thoughts and replace them with positive and enabling thoughts.
